Top Rhinoplasty Benefits

Improved Appearance

Rhinoplasty can change the size and shape of the nose, reduce or increase the width of the nasal bridge, reduce or increase the size of the nostrils, realign a crooked nose, reshape the tip of the nose to reduce size or length, or eliminate large bumps along the nasal bridge. After a rhinoplasty, your nose will appear more symmetrical and proportionate to the rest of your facial features.

Better Breathing

A rhinoplasty is also suitable for treating respiratory problems such as a deviated septum, which can inhibit your ability to breathe properly. Additionally, a rhinoplasty can correct other structural problems or damage suffered due to nasal trauma. Patients who suffered from respiratory problems corrected by the surgery will enjoy the ability to breathe with ease and comfort.

Higher Self-Confidence

If your nose is crooked, curved, or misshapen, it can affect how you feel about all of your facial features. During your consultation at Chicago Hair Institute in greater Chicago, IL, Dr. Nadimi will listen to your cosmetic concerns to design a procedure that helps you get the nose you've always wanted. By helping you feel your best, rhinoplasty can improve your self-confidence and day-to-day life.

Are You a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Dissatisfaction With Your Nose

Rhinoplasty is appropriate for any patient who is unhappy with their appearance due to the size and shape of their nose.

Appropriate Age

Teens are often the most dissatisfied with the appearance of their noses; however, we do not recommend rhinoplasty until the nose has stopped growing. For girls, this is usually around age 15, but it can be as late as 17 or 18 for boys.

Impaired Nasal Function

Rhinoplasty can also be an appropriate treatment for a broken nose, deviated septum, or other condition that inhibits breathing.

Good Overall Health

Patients should be in good overall health to undergo plastic surgery. It is important to discuss any potential health concerns with Dr. Nadimi during your consultation.

Realistic Expectations

A patient should have realistic expectations for the potential outcome of their procedure. It is important to discuss your treatment expectations with Dr. Nadimi during your consultation.

Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

There are two primary rhinoplasty techniques: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Dr. Nadimi offers both at our greater Chicago practice. Here's how these techniques differ:

Open Rhinoplasty

  • Incisions are made on the tissue between the nostrils
  • Scars are hidden underneath the nose
  • This method allows for easier access to nasal bone and cartilage
  • This method enables greater accuracy during nasal reshaping
  • It is always used in revision rhinoplasty cases

Closed Rhinoplasty

  • Incisions are made within the nostrils (no external incisions)
  • Scars are hidden inside of the nostrils
  • Patients can expect slightly less swelling
  • This method can be used for most rhinoplasties
Dr. Nadimi will ultimately choose which technique is right for you based on your unique concerns, treatment goals, surgical history, physical attributes (cartilage and skin thickness), and other factors.

What to Expect During Rhinoplasty

Dr. Nadimi possesses a keen eye for cosmetic detail and can reshape your nose to complement your other facial features.

Anesthesia

All rhinoplasty procedures are performed under anesthesia.

Incisions

Incisions may be closed or open. Closed incisions are placed inside the nose for inconspicuous scars, while an open incision results in a small scar along the underside of the nose.

Modifications

Dr. Nadimi will carefully modify the bone, cartilage, and skin to create your desired nasal shape. The way that the bone, cartilage, and skin are modified will depend on your nose structure, your goals, and other factors.

Sutures

Our rhinoplasty surgeon will then close the incisions with sutures.

Nasal Cast

After surgery, a nasal cast will be used to stabilize the nose. This is removed after seven days. Additionally, nasal splints may also be placed inside the nose and removed after seven days.

Life After Nose Surgery

Side Effects

Possible side effects include swelling, bruising, bleeding, and pain, but these should resolve after a few days. To minimize these side effects, keep your head elevated for a few days after surgery. If you experience significant pain or bleeding or develop a fever, please contact our Chicago practice as soon as possible.

Aftercare

One of the best parts of nasal surgery is that there is very little downtime required. Most nasal splints are removed after a week and most patients return to work and light activities after about three weeks. It is best to keep the surgical site dry and clean for several days to allow the site to heal. Try not to touch the covering or sutures. If you are prescribed medication by your plastic surgeon, take it as directed. Dr. Nadimi will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure that you experience an efficient, successful recovery.

Follow-Ups

You will have a few follow-up appointments at our Chicago practice. It is important that you attend these appointments as they will allow your surgeon to monitor your healing. The first appointment is typically a few days after surgery, with one or two more scheduled a few weeks out. Your surgeon will remove the splint at one of these appointments and monitor your results.

Results

About one month after surgery, most of the facial swelling will have subsided and patients can begin to see their results; however, it can take up to one year for your final nasal shape to become visible. The results of your nasal procedure will last a lifetime.

More Rhinoplasty FAQs

Does rhinoplasty hurt?

The surgery itself is performed under anesthesia, so there won't be any discomfort during the procedure. After surgery, some facial sensitivity, swelling, and bruising are to be expected; however, most discomfort can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication and usually goes away after a few days.

Will people be able to tell that I had a nose job?

Dr. Nadimi works carefully to reshape your nose in a way that complements your other facial features. While close friends and family may notice that you've had nasal surgery, your results will be so natural-looking and the scarring so discreet that strangers will not notice you've had plastic surgery.

Is rhinoplasty safe?

It is important to remember that rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure, and all surgeries carry some risk; however, the risks associated with this plastic surgery are minimal and complications are rare, especially when performed by a double board-certified plastic surgeon. During your consultation with Dr. Nadimi, she will discuss the risks and benefits. It is important that you disclose any health concerns and medications with your plastic surgeon so she can ensure you are healthy enough to undergo surgery.

Can I combine my rhinoplasty with other cosmetic procedures?

Yes. Our Chicago plastic surgeons are trained in a variety of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, including facelifts, hair transplants, blepharoplasty, BOTOX® Cosmetic, and more. During your initial consultation at our Chicago practice, your plastic surgeon will discuss your goals and develop a custom treatment plan.
