Blepharoplasty Can Correct Sagging Eyelids for a Rejuvenated Appearance

Dr. Sahar Nadimi performs blepharoplasty at our Oakbrook Terrace, IL, practice to lift drooping eyelids and reduce bags under the eyes. Also known as eyelid surgery or eye lift, blepharoplasty can address both aesthetic and functional concerns regarding the eyelids. With eyelid surgery, Dr. Nadimi can eliminate excess skin and fat that cause folds and bags to give you a rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. If sagging eyelids are partially blocking your vision, the procedure can restore its full range.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids, or both. Incisions are hidden in the natural features of the eyelid area to conceal scars.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure used to eliminate sagging skin and wrinkles in either the upper or lower eyelids, or both. Eyelid surgery is an effective treatment for:

  • Eliminating loose or sagging skin from the upper eyelid, which can create deep creases and can even affect vision
  • Removing deposits of fat from the lids that can make the eyes appear puffy
  • Eliminating bags under the eyes that result from loose skin and excess fat
  • Firming the skin in the lower eyelids to eliminate sagging skin and reduce fine wrinkles

It is important to know that while blepharoplasty can treat excess eyelid skin that starts to droop as well as possible bulging fat pads, it is not intended to eliminate wrinkles from the outer corners of the eyes and the high cheekbones (crow's feet). Dr. Nadimi can use Botox to correct wrinkles in the area without surgery.

Often times, superior results are achieved with complementary procedures. Many patients choose to combine blepharoplasty with a facelift  or brow lift for a more dramatic cosmetic improvement. Dr. Nadimi may also recommend these to obtain a well-balanced and natural result.

Blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive surgery that can produce significant results and great patient satisfaction.

Are You a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

If you are unhappy with your appearance or have diminished vision because of loose or sagging eyelids, you may be a candidate for blepharoplasty. You should be in good overall health and free from any serious eye conditions to qualify for eyelid surgery. It is important to have specific treatment goals and realistic expectations for your results.

Reverse Signs of Aging

Dr. Sahar Nadimi explains how the eyes are one of the first places to see signs of aging. Her unique and precise skill allows her to perform eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, to reduce the tired, groggy look, and result in a refreshed appearance. Dr. Nadimi's expertise enables patients to recover quickly and and resume their normal social life sooner than later.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

You will receive appropriate anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout surgery. During the procedure, the upper eyelid incision is hidden in your natural eyelid crease. The lower eyelid incision may be placed either behind your eyelid or just below the lash line for minimal visibility. Excess eyelid skin and any bulging fat are gently removed. Sutures are then placed to close the incision. The blepharoplasty procedure usually takes between one to two hours if not combined with other procedures.

Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, so you will need another adult to drive you home once the surgery is complete. We also recommend having someone stay with you overnight.  Most patients require several days or up to a week off of work until the bruising and swelling subsides. You may experience some swelling and/or bruising, but both should subside within a week. Dr. Nadimi will give you specific instructions regarding your recovery, such as using over-the-counter pain medication, ice, and artificial tears to reduce discomfort. After about a week, you will return to have your stitches removed.

Eyelid surgery is a relatively low-risk procedure. However, there are some complications patients should be aware of. Bleeding and infection are possible complications with almost any surgery. Complications specific to eyelid surgery include dry eyes, discoloration of the eyelids, inability to close the eyes, a sagging lower lash line, or vision impairment. You can reduce your risk of complications by choosing a skilled plastic and reconstructive surgeon such as Dr. Nadimi
