FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (also known as the strip method) are two of the most effective options for restoring a thick, full head of hair after thinning or balding. At the Chicago Hair Institute in Oakbrook Terrace, serving the entire Chicago, IL, area, hair restoration is our main mission. We have helped thousands of men and women like you regain their look and confidence through hair restoration surgery.

A smooth recovery is key to getting great results that last for the long term. I’m here to provide some tips and advice on how to care for your hair after hair transplant surgery so you can experience the smoothest possible recovery.

You’ll likely see new hair growth within three months and be able to enjoy your full results within six months of your hair transplant. Protecting the area in the meantime can make a big difference for your final outcome.

4 Tips to Make Your Hair Transplant Recovery Easier

  1. Take a Few Days to Rest: Hair transplants are careful operations that typically take anywhere from three to eight hours to complete. Naturally, many patients feel a bit fatigued once it’s finished. It’s important to listen to your body and give it the rest it needs after the procedure. Plan to take the next few days off from work or school to focus on rest and adjusting to your recovery regimen.
  2. Wash Your Hair Carefully: After about four or five days, your scalp will be healed enough for washing. This will help manage any scabbing and keep the treatment site clean. Use the shampoo you’ve been provided and very gently massage it into your scalp, then rinse with cups of warm water and pat dry very gently. We will demonstrate this washing method after your procedure at our hair restoration office in Oakbrook Terrace so you know exactly how to handle it at home.
  3. Wear a Loose Hat and Avoid the Sun: The newly transplanted follicles will be vulnerable to exposure in the first weeks after your hair transplant. Wearing a hat that doesn’t hug the scalp too tightly will prevent contact with other surfaces and keep the delicate follicles intact. Similarly, sustained sun exposure can compromise the grafts and damage your scalp as it heals. It can even lead to increased scarring. We recommend limiting your time in the sun throughout the healing period, or at least wearing a hat when you are outside.
  4. Don’t Itch or Scratch: Itchiness is a very common symptom after hair transplantation. This is a sign that the area is healing. Though tempting, you should avoid scratching because it can disrupt that healing. Keep in mind that the itching is temporary — it typically only lasts a week or two. Ensuring the area is moisturized through misting or lotion can make a big difference. Depending on your specific case, we may also recommend taking an antihistamine medication to reduce discomfort.
