Hair Restoration FAQ

Hair loss can cause complex emotions and lead to the search for solutions to grow new hair.

Since 1996, Chicago, IL, has turned to the world-class team at the Chicago Hair Institute for effective hair loss solutions.

We are here to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about hair restoration, hair loss, and hair transplants.

How Common Is Hair Loss?

/

One of the nation's leading medical centers, NYU Langone Health, reports that over 80 percent of men and nearly half of women experience significant hair loss at some point in their lives.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Alopecia causes the majority of hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia, commonly referred to as balding, is a hereditary condition that develops in men and women. Pattern baldness is seen most commonly in men, and it occurs because of an inherited genetic predisposition that causes hair to fall out with age.

Other hair loss causes include:

  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Medications & Treatments
  • Damaging Hair Products
  • Compulsion to Pull Out Hair
  • Certain Hairstyles
  • Scalp Psoriasis
  • Scalp Infection

Common Questions About Restoration Results

Do Hair Transplants Grow Hair Permanently?

Yes. During hair transplant surgery, we move follicles of hair from the donor area on the back and sides of the head to the areas that are thinning. The transplanted hair will continue to grow for life as long as the donor hair remains vigorous and viable. In addition to providing hair transplants, our surgeons can advise you on key actions to take to maintain hair vitality.

Can You Obtain Your Original Hair Density?

Our hair transplant experts work to achieve the full hair our Chicago patients desire; however, it is typically not possible to restore hair to its original density in most patients because only a limited amount of hair can be borrowed from donor regions. Fortunately, patients with excellent donor reserves may be able to achieve dense hair using the dense packing surgical technique.

Why Are Some Hair Transplants So Obvious?

Outdated techniques, novice surgeons, and assembly line-style clinics are generally responsible for unnatural or "pluggy" looking transplants. Clinics that view hair transplant surgery as big business rather than medicine tend to focus on quantity over quality. Simply put, they care about their finances more than your follicles. They may employ sub-par techniques and unethical behavior to profit from those affected by hair loss.

Creating a completely natural hairline is the most important aspect of our surgery. We meticulously plan each hair transplant to provide the most natural hairline possible. Patients who qualify for hair replacement surgery can achieve remarkably natural results, as the satisfied patients in our gallery can attest.

The surgery I received was an FUT hair restoration, mainly of the front hairline, to cover an old scar, along with a few additional grafts in the crown region. My experience at the Chicago Hair Institute Clinic was A+++, and I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone. Thank you.

Are There Nonsurgical Replacement Options?

There are some nonsurgical alternatives for hair restoration, but our hair transplant experts have historically found these medications to be more effective for maintaining existing hair than they are for regrowing new hair. Although the drugs are marketed as treatments for hair loss, they usually provide little more than limited-density restoration. Two well-known FDA-approved options have several drawbacks:

Rogaine

Rogaine® is an over-the-counter baldness treatment. Though it can achieve positive results in several months, it requires continual use and only works for certain types of baldness. Some users report that hair improvements can fade despite continued Rogaine application.

Propecia

Propecia® is a daily-use tablet designed to stop hair loss with consistent use. It is only FDA-approved for men and, in 2022, the FDA mandated that the label must list suicidal ideation and behavior among its potential adverse effects.

Because of these drawbacks, we recommend hair restoration surgery as a more effective, long-lasting way to reverse hair loss.

Is Hair Transplantation Painful?

Our patients feel minimal discomfort during our hair transplant procedures since we administer a local anesthetic before surgery. Patients may experience minor discomfort or tightness during the healing phase following their hair transplant. Most patients remain comfortable during this time with little more than an over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen.

What Are the Risks of Hair Transplantation?

Just like any surgery, hair transplantation carries some risks such as infection, bleeding, and scarring; however, complications are extremely rare when the procedure is performed by an experienced and skilled surgeon. Patients travel far and wide to receive hair transplants from our board-certified surgeons because they trust our ability to minimize risks and maximize results.

There is also the risk that a patient may not achieve the fullness that he or she expected after transplanting hair follicles. We pride ourselves on making sure our patients have realistic goals for their hair transplants. That being said, we make every effort possible to exceed expectations.

You won't have to look anywhere else.
