Hair transplant surgery and bruising around the eyes is a normal occurrence that tends to develop in about 20 percent of patients. Before undergoing your surgical hair loss treatment at the Chicago Hair Institute in Chicago, IL, our doctors will meet with you to discus the procedure in detail, addressing any questions you may have and the side effects to expect.

Although hair loss is often the result of age, certain factors, such as heredity, medications, and medical conditions can cause you to lose your hair much sooner. Choosing to undergo hair loss treatment can provide you with a fuller head of hair and a boosted self-confidence.

How to Treat Eye Bruises

It is not uncommon for bruising and swelling to formulate around your eyes after hair transplant surgery, due to excess fluid migrating downward from the surgical site and settling in the upper eyelids. Although it can be combined with soreness, due to the stretching of the skin, it is not problematic and will resolve on its own within a week.

To ease any discomfort, you can take your pain medications and anti-inflammatories as directed, as well as apply a cold compress to the area. Swelling will generally subside in about three to five days after surgery, but it may take a little longer for the skin around your eyes to return back to a normal color. This discoloration can generally be hidden with concealer.

Other Common Side Effects

In addition to eye bruising, there are other side effects to be aware of after undergoing hair transplant surgery, including:

Scalp Itching and Swelling

Itching is often a sign of healing that is caused by the nerves and cells within your body being stimulated. It can also be due to your skin stretching as a result of swelling and inflammation. Taking your anti-inflammatories, applying a cold compress, and shampooing your hair once cleared to do so will help alleviate uncomfortable symptoms.

Bleeding

Although this side affect can be a bit disconcerting, it is nothing to be alarmed by, unless bleeding intensifies and is followed by increased pain. In such cases, this may be a beginning sign of infection. Unlike infection, bleeding is normal and can generally be stopped by placing gauze and pressure on the affected area.

Numbness

As your nerves acclimate and heal, it is not uncommon to feel numbness or a tingling sensation throughout your head where the hair was transplanted. This side effect is only temporary and will subside over the course of the next few weeks.

Changes in Hair Growth

As the hair follicles readjust to the new normal, you may notice changes in the way your hair grows. This could include additional thinning and unnatural clusters of hair. This is nothing to be worried about, and unfortunately there is nothing you can do to prevent it. Over the next few months, this will dissipate and the thickness of your hair will increase.
